Very thirsty caterpillars

Each week I am part of the kindergarten team’s literacy group.  A small group comes to me each day during literacy time to share a story and engage in activities to extend the story and theme for that week.

Last week my kindergarteners and I shared the story The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle.  After our reading, we moved to the workroom to create caterpillars for them to care for in their classroom.  Each group stuffed a knee-high with potting soil.  They then sprinkled the soil with grass seed.  We tied it off into sections, added googly eyes, and they gave it a name and some water.  Today both classes were presented with their “Very Thirsty Caterpillars” so they could continue to water them and see what happens with them.

I very much enjoy this time with the kindergarteners.  Even though I am doing the same thing each day, each group is different and having just 4-5 students at a time gives me more opportunities to get to know them and for them to get to know me and their library.  The other students love to see what they are going to do next!

Beginnings…

I have just finished updating my school webpage by adding a link to a different blog.  I have invited students and teachers to put in their two cents worth about what they’re reading.  Prior to this, I got my toes wet with a 21 classes blog for my student book clubs.  Now I’m feeling my oats and pushing it out there to our entire student population!  We’ll see how it goes.  I plan on encouraging my students to continue through the summer as a way to promote reading from afar.  It could happen…
